August 2010:

ILYA Opti Champs:  Minnetonka Opti sailors place three in the RWB Top Ten – Two in Green Top Ten

Fourteen Minnetonka, one White Bear and two Lake Calhoun sailors attended the 2010 ILYA Championships at Lake Okauchee on August 1-3, 2010.

Good winds on Monday allowed four solid races, with Minnesota RWB sailors finishing strong in every race.  Minnetonka’s Mimi El-Khazindar and Jack Bitney proved the most consistent with finishes of Mimi 3, 4, 5, 10 and Jack 8, 3, 3, 12 for overall 2nd and 3rd place for the event.  Both sailing in the Blue Fleet, they were also 2nd and 3rd in Blue, with fellow Minnetonka sailor Johnny Ferguson finishing 4th in Blue and 8th overall.  Mimi also claimed the Top Female Skipper award, taking home the Allen Trophy.  Johnny came away a race winner, with a solid victory in Race 3.

White Bear’s Kate Cox was the #2 Female Skipper, finishing 16th overall.

Minnetonka’s Luis Narvaez took home the Red Fleet 5th place trophy, finishing 34th overall.

In the Green Fleet, Minnetonka competitors Nate Olmsted and Riley Brackin placed 2nd and 6th respectively, sailing under some weed prone conditions in the morning, then sailing the longest beat of their lives, to get to the alternate course in the afternoon.  Both sailed well and will be a force to be reckoned with in the future!

Other worthy Minnesota finishers included John Hartfiel, Max Bernstein, Corbin Burdick, Annika Ekholm, Luis Narvaez, Aidan Boylan, Sam Sigel, Lilly Loosbrock, Morgan Brackin, Sydney Maxwell and Bennett Holmgren.

The RWB Regatta Champion was Trevor Trepton, Oconomowoc.

The Green Fleet Regatta Champion was Will Davies, Lake Beulah.

No wind on Tuesday made for playing Texas Hold ‘Em, Spoons and other assorted land games. .. .. .

Minnesota Opti Sailors Challenged by shifty conditions at Lake Beulah

Twelve Minnetonka, 4 White Bear Lake and 2 Lake Calhoun sailors attended the Opti Inlands August 3-5.  Beulah provided fickle winds all day on day one: a morning of hope and then evaporation of wind followed by a shiftiness only the best sailors survived. One hundred and four sailors tackled the wind and on-land fun.  Day two resulted in less wind, and no sailing opportunities.  Sand volleyball, egg toss and fun with friends were the order of the day – seeing old friends and making new ones – a great raffle – ended with outstanding support of all the sailors and invitations to the RWB Chip for the top 9.

The Minnesota stars were Johnny Ferguson, with a 4th, 1st and 7th – taking 1st in the Blue Fleet(11 and 12 year olds)and 2nd Overall – just two points behind the winner, Griffin Rolander, Lake Geneva.  Johnny’s tenacity, talent and skill paid off, as he both defended from the lead and attacked (in one race) from behind.  A young Calhoun sailor, John Hartfiel, was 1st in the White Fleet (10 years and under), and 8th overall!  Minnetonka sailor Declan Armour finished 4th in the Red Fleet (13 years and older).  Other worthy competitors included Sam Sigel, Max Peterson, Max Bernstein, Corbin Burdick, Jack Bitney, Luis Narvaez, Annika Ekholm, Valerie McGoldrick, David Dotterweich and Sydney Maxwell for Minnetonka – Kate Cox, Conner Lee, Molly and Susie Voltz for White Bear Lake – and Aidan Boylan from Lake Calhoun. See www.ilya.org for complete results.

Compliments of Steve Bernstein, LMSS Board Member and Opti Parent – check out the great pictures of the RWB Opti fleet from the TCYS races at Deephaven, White Bear Lake, Wayzata and Calhoun. For you Green Fleet sailors – I’ll have to lean on Steve a little to see if we can get his talent on the Green Fleet course over the next couple of regattas. These are really GREAT shots!!! Also, please remember to check out www.youthsailing.org and/or www.twincitiesyouthsailing.com for additional TCYS information and results.

June 20th Friday Manitou Days Regatta Over 77 competitors participated in the 2008 Manitou Days TCYS regatta hosted by White Bear Sailing School at Ramsey Beach. Light variable winds started out the day with only the green fleet completing 3 races in the morning. After a nourishing lunch of hot dogs, the fleets were sent back out to try for a few more races. Luckily, the wind filled in enough for more racing.

In the Red White and Blue fleet there were 28 racers. Minnetonka and White Bear had a great event with their racers taking the top five spots. Addy Ferguson of Lake Minnetonka had her 1st regatta win at White Bear this year with finishes or 1, 2, 4, 2, 1. Anders Ekholm also from Lake Minnetonka, was close on her tail by one point difference, it came down to the last race and throw outs. Ian Solum, who won the week before at Minnetonka, had a great event winning one race. Cole Lee and Willy Crary from White Bear ended up 4th and 5th with Cole Lee totaling 16 points and Willy with 22 points.

The Green fleet had an eventful turnout with 21 racers. Wayzata had a strong showing taking home hardware for the 1st place and 3rd place. Griffin Joseph won the regatta with points totaling 13, luckily getting to throw out an 18 for the regatta win. Corbin Burdick of Lake Minnetonka took home 2nd with points totaling 14, and Aiden Burke from Wayzata placed third with his first race win in the green fleet.

The first time in history the White Bear Sailing School hosted the 420's at White Bear. We had a total of 10 boats, 4 from WBSS and 6 from WSS. Lucy Andrews from Wayzata swept up with 2 race wins and one 3rd. She won the regatta by one point with Austin Hensley from Wayzata placing 2nd and Erik Brust from White Bear placing 3rd. White Bear was really happy they could accommodate all the racers and hope next year we have even more 420's show up for this great event.

The Laser Racers got in 3 decent races. David Thompson of White Bear won all three races, with John Etherington from Lake Minnetonka coming in 2nd. Wheeler Morris of White Bear wasn’t far behind in third place. A total of 8 racers came out to enjoy the event. All in all, the event went well. The racers enjoyed the door prizes at the end of the event and the Ice Cream Man even showed up much to the chagrin of the parents. White Bear looks forward to hosting another event in the future and hopes to see everyone this Friday at Wayzata!!! Good JOB racers and Parents!!!!

USODA Team Trials - Annapolis.
Local sailors Addy Ferguson, Eddie Cox, Declan Armour, Ben Garber, Anders Ekholm and Griffin Robillard made the trip.  Sailing conditions were excellent, but different black flag procedures made things very challenging for these young sailors.  Results.
